Is HUID mandatory for all gold jewellery?
Yes. BIS made HUID hallmarking mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India from June 2021 onwards. Every piece must carry a 6-character alphanumeric HUID before it can legally be sold.
What is the difference between hallmarking and HUID?
Hallmarking is the purity certification (22K, 18K etc.). HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) is the 6-character code printed on the piece that links it to the BIS database. Both are required.
What happens if we sell a piece without HUID?
Under the BIS Act 2016, selling non-HUID hallmarked gold jewellery can attract fines up to ₹1 lakh per article and cancellation of your BIS Certificate of Registration.
